Entrepreneurship and Business Development

The ASP aims to develop a critical mass of rural entrepreneurs, be, they individual or groups, which with some support are able to recognize and exploit economic opportunities, and are able to adapt as when & how new opportunities arise. These emerging entrepreneurs will spearhead economic and livelihoods diversification and expansion thus creating a dynamic & sustainable local economy, which will be founded on a productive, profitable and sustainable use of existing and harnessed natural resources.

Support to business development and emergence of rural entrepreneurs as a way of ensuring food security and increased income and ultimately poverty reduction is the core function of ASP. This is facilitated with a clear focus on “Farming as a Business”.

Effectively facilitate entrepreneurship and business development among the target group, the ASP has identified several issues to be addressed. These include:

  1. Promoting linkages, exchange and contact between farmers, private sector, local government, local authorities and NGOs that contribute to effective service delivery.
  2. Improving business and management skills among small scale farmers (men, women and youth)
  3. Promoting a) equal opportunities for female entrepreneurs, and b) business activities suitable for women headed households
  4. Facilitating the emergence & strengthening of rural savings institutions and increased access to credit

In addition issues arising from programme implementation constitute topics for policy task forces where experiences & lessons from programme implementation provide valuable lessons for policy development aimed at enabling frameworks for rural entrepreneurs.
